Specialisterne: Stories of Success Across 13 Countries

Specialisterne (which translates from Danish as ‘The Specialists’) is an innovative social business concept originally founded in Denmark in 2004 by Thorkil Sonne. Specialisterne is internationally recognised as the first and foremost example of how autistic adults can become effectively included in society and provide valuable, high quality services to employers.

Specialisterne works to enable jobs for neurodivergent persons through social entrepreneurship, innovative employment models and a national change in mindset. We believe that it is not the neurodivergent individual who needs to change, but rather the way the labour market is conducted.

The international network of Specialisterne chapters in 13 countries:

Specialisterne chapters are all based on the ‘dandelion principle’.

A dandelion is only a weed in an environment where it is not welcomed. If the plant is transferred to an environment where it is welcomed, valued and nurtured – it turns into an herb with numerous medicinal and nutritional values. Autistic persons often struggle to feel welcome in the labor market despite having much sought after skills such as attention to detail, loyalty or an outstanding memory to name a few. Specialisterne chapters around the world strive to create an environment where each individual can thrive in workplace and provide support both for the individual and the employer to maintain this comfort zone.
